    The beginning of Grupo Mateus

    In 1986, Ilson Mateus opened a 50 m² store in Balsas, a city located in the state of Maranhão. Following the success of the business, the shop started the wholesale operations.

  2. 1997

    New brand: Eletro Mateus

    In 2010, Grupo. In 2010, Grupo Mateus started to sell home appliances, home wares and household goods under the Eletro Mateus brand.

  3. 2000

    New Cities

    Aiming the expansion to new cities, Grupo Mateus opened its first store in Imperatriz, the second largest city in Maranhão.

  4. 2002

    Opening in Santa Inês 

    In this year, a new and modern store was opened in the city of Santa Inês, Maranhão. The city was not only an important distribution point, it was also strategic for Grupo Mateus to start operations in São Luís, the capital city of Maranhão

  5. 2003

    Opening in São Luís

    In 2003, Grupo Mateus inaugurated its first two stores in São Luís, which were followed by other openings throughout the years.

  6. 2007

    Business diversification

    During the year, Grupo Mateus started two new operations: the bakery business under the Bumba Meu Pão brand, and cash-and-carry sales under the Mix Atacarejo brand.

  7. 2009

    Opening in Açailândia

    Grupo Mateus expanded its operations into another city and opened a Mateus Supermercado store in the city of Açailândia, Maranhão.

  8. 2011

    MateusCard and Bumba Meu Pão expansion

    Grupo Mateus launched MateusCard, its own credit card in a parternship with Bradesco. Durinig the same year, Bumba Meu Pão had its production capacity tripled.

    New States

    As part of its strategy, Grupo Mateus expanded its operations into new states and began to operate in Marabá, a city in Pará state.

  10. 2013

    Expansion in Maranhão

    During the year, four new shops were inaugurated in Maranhão.

  11. 2014

    Investing in production and logistics

    In 2014, Grupo Mateus opened another supermarket in São Luís. It also expanded its production and logistics structure, with the inauguration of a greengrocer division to supply fruit and vegetables to its stores and a distribution center in Imperatriz.

  12. 2015

    New openings in Maranhão

    In 2015, Grupo Mateus inaugurated another three stores and reopened the first Mix Atacarejo in Balsas. The store was totally refurbished to follow the modern desing of the other shops from the same segment.

  13. 2016

    First online business

    Grupo Mateus created its first online business: Canto do Chefe, an e-commerce brand focused on micro and small food businesses, merchants and restaurants.Investing in the premium segment

    After a major renovation, one of the most strategic stores in São Luís opened Spazio Mateus, a new retail area focused on premium products, with a restaurant, a coffe shop, boulangerie and the largest winery in Maranhão.

  14. 2017

    Neighborhood stores

    A new retail brand was created: Camiño – a neighborhood store that serves cities with up to 50,000 habitants.

  15. 2018

    More investments in logistics and production

    To meet the demands of the fast growing business, a new distribution center and slicing and portioning facility were opened in São Luís.

  16. 2019

    Digital expansion

    Two launches marked Grupo Mateus’ digital expansion: Mateus App, which offers discounts and the e-commerce Mateus Online, focused on non-food products.

  17. 2020

    Opening in Piauí

    In 2020, Grupo Mateus continued to expand its operations into another state and opened a Mix Atacarejo store in Teresina, capital city of Piauí state.

    Grupo Mateus IPO

    Based on logistics, technology, people and services, Grupo Mateus figures in the country as the largest food retail company with 100% Brazilian capital. Continuing its strategic expansion, the group carried out its public offering of shares in B3, in the Novo Mercado segment, following the highest standards of Corporate Governance.
